MAY 2006
Eighteen years ago Heidi Godman was a new reporter at what was then called WWSB Channel 40.
They had a cramped, somewhat claustrophobic building on Clark Road, but more than made up for it by having friendly, receptive reporters and anchors like Heidi. One look at their sleek new station and their improved news program and you can see how, what is now called more logically ABC 7, has grown along with the community.

Heidi is genuine on air and off but decidedly less serious in the latter—as you'll see in her playful photo on page 16. Btw, Heidi was hired at then WWSB by then station manager Linda DesMarais (also profiled in West Coast Woman). Linda is back in the local media biz again — this time as station manager at rival SNN 6.

Last Call for our May 17 Luncheon

Have you bought your ticket for our May 17 luncheon yet? Better hurry, they're going fast and won't be sold at the door.

Here's what's on tap: Doors at Michael's on East open at 11 a.m. Why so early? We're having a mini expo and networking session before the luncheon begins. Exhibitors include women's health (skin care, mesotherapy), continuing education and health insurance. Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon. The program and luncheon start promptly at 12:15.

Program-wise you won't want to miss this event. We'll introduce some of the many WCW we've profiled over the past 18 years—an eclectic and talented group of women. Then we'll have some of them come up on stage and tell us what they've been up to.

We'll also be giving checks to two area charities who will both be on hand. Finally, we'll have an inspirational talk by Melissa Wandall, an amazing woman dedicated to making our roads safer. Melissa has spearheaded the STOP! Red Light Running Coaliton and has helped introduce Florida House Bill 259 named the Mark Wandall Bill after her husband, Mark, who was killed by someone running a red light.

After lunch and raffle tickets we'll reopen the expo and you can again visit our exhibitors. Come early or stay late. Do the lunch or do it all—it's your choice and we respect how busy you are so we made it flexible.

But do come early. You know how these lunches are, women, we never see enough of each other and it'll be great to catch up! Plus, you might make some new friends from the two-county area. And bring your business cards!

We'll need your reservation by Wednesday, May 10. We can easily email you an invite and an RSVP card so call us at 954-3300 or reach us by email at wcwnewspaper@aol.com.
See you there....!

Women on the Move
Last month I wrote that Patricia Caswell was stepping down at the Sarasota County Arts Council. This month I can report that Nancy Roucher has accepted the position of Interim Executive Director.

Nancy will run the day-to-day operations, as well as overseeing the continuation of programs and activities while the search for Patricia's replacement takes place.

Both Nancy and Patricia were involved with the Arts Council from day one. Nancy serves as Arts Education chair for the Council and leads the Arts Education Task Force, a school/community partnership that has received recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is an ex-officio member of the Arts Council Board.

“When I was asked to be the first Director of the Sarasota County Arts Council in 1986, I never dreamed I’d be back in this capacity 20 years later,” Roucher remarked. She served in that capacity for a year to help launch the fledging organization. Give Nancy a call and welcome her aboard at 941-365-5118.
